Fireproof vertical and lateral file cabinets secure files and valuables from theft, fire, and explosions. Fire departments nationwide respond to a fire every 19 seconds - over a half million structure fires per year - and 70% of the fires (1000 per day) are home fires. An important concern should be whether file cabinets that store important documents and valuables are media safe and carry the UL 125/350 fireproof ratings. When purchasing a fireproof file cabinet, keep in mind that there is a difference between being UL tested and actually passing those tests.

Make sure fireproof file cabinets are impact-tested to survive a fall from 30 feet. Fireproof tests are rated for withstanding half an hour to four hours in a fire, considering that at half an hour the file cabinet is heated to 1550 degrees, and at four hours to 2000 degrees. UL 125 and 350 refers to the temperatures inside the drawers - paper products burn at 400 degrees. Fireproof file cabinets should also be waterproof to ensure that valuables are protected while firefighters are tackling the blaze.
